Futuristic Portraits Compared: Microsoft, Leonardo, Flux, Stable Diffusion Web, and Ideogram Go Head-to-Head

Christmas is coming up fast, have you already bought all the presents?

The world of AI-generated imagery is evolving rapidly, and each generator brings its own magic. In my latest experiment, I tested five different AI image generators: Microsoft Designer, Leonardo (using the Lightning XL model), Flux, Stable Diffusion, and Ideogram. The goal was to create stunning close-up portraits of a futuristic female figure using an identical prompt. However, the results couldn’t be more different!

Overall, some interesting images were created, of which I’ll summarize 15 descriptively here. Some images were also upscaled using Leonardo and Flux tools, and we’ll take a closer look at cropped versions of those at the end of the post. Who delivers the best results? Take a look at the images and form your own opinion!

View Prompt Close-up portrait of a futuristic female character with a face resembling metallic chrome, adorned with fine droplets for a glossy, surreal texture. Her vivid deep teal eyes contrast sharply against her silver skin, and her metallic makeup emphasizes her high-tech, futuristic style. Cold blue light reflects on parts of her face, adding a hint of cold to her cool silver tones. Her hair flows around her like liquid metal, smoothly framing her face. The background is dark.

Microsoft

Microsoft implemented many aspects very appealingly.
Upon closer inspection, however, the requested colors were not implemented correctly, and the hair also does not fully match the description. The image shows pores and skin textures.

Leonardo Lightning XL

Hmmm? What can I say? The images are good, no question, but they are not what I described. However, the crystals on the middle face are brilliant! But even here, the colors often do not match as desired.

Flux

Reddish shimmering portrait of a futuristic woman with a shiny chrome effect, created with Flux.Portrait of a futuristic figure with metallic chrome skin, flowing textures, and very intense blue eyes, created with Flux.

The bluish face has the texture on the forehead that I had originally envisioned. Unfortunately, the other image is more copper or bronze and not chrome. Both faces have very even skin, which is presumably an attempt to depict the smooth chrome surface. And the faces are very appealing.

Stable Diffusion Web

Standard

Again, a very surprising result, but it’s clearly a mask in the second image. Here, too, the colors didn’t really hit the mark.

Cyberpunk

These images are the only ones that show the blue light influence. But deep petrol, it is not either. 😂

Ideogram

Futuristic portrait with liquid metal hair and smooth chrome-like forehead mask, greenish metallic eye makeup, created with Ideogram.Futuristic woman portrait with flowing metallic hair, her neck and jawline covered with a chrome-like material. Created with Ideogram.Close-up of a futuristic woman with metallic skin and silvery-blue highlights. The hair is liquid metallic silver-blue, created with Ideogram.

Here, for the first time, the hair was portrayed as liquid metal. And the third image is the only one that shows what I had envisioned—smooth chrome, like from an airbrush.

And here’s the promised upscale comparison
The colors are somewhat different, and the skin texture isn’t identical either. Which version is better, I can’t say. What do you think?

Comparison of two AI upscales: right Leonardo and left Flux, close-up of a metallicly made-up eye, clearly visible eyelashes, and water droplets on the natural-looking skin.

Besides the Lightning XL model, I also tested Leonardo’s Anime model. The results were astonishing and brought a completely unique mood to the futuristic style. Since Leonardo has many models, they will be compared, and this deserves its own blog post where I delve deeper into the characteristics and differences of the models.

These tests show how differently AI models respond to the same prompt. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Which image appeals to you the most? Leave a comment or share your opinion – I’m curious to know which details you liked best.

Look forward to my next blog post, where I’ll introduce you to more exciting experiments with Leonardo AI. Until then, stay creative and curious! 😊
